Matcha Kōbō Opens in Melbourne: A New Chapter of Craft and Calm

Alleyway Group is proud to announce the opening of Matcha Kōbō, our newest concept and the first of its kind in Australia — a dedicated matcha atelier bringing the spirit of Uji, Kyoto, to the heart of Melbourne.

Opened in May 2025, Matcha Kōbō represents more than a café. It’s a place where tradition meets intention — where every step, from milling to whisking, is guided by patience and precision.

At its core stands Australia’s only in-store imported stone mill, a symbol of our commitment to authenticity and craft. Each serving of matcha is milled fresh daily, preserving the vivid colour, aroma, and umami that define true ceremonial-grade tea.



Our matcha is sourced from heritage tea farms in Uji, Kyoto — Japan’s most revered tea region, known for centuries of cultivation and refinement. With every bowl and cup, Matcha Kōbō seeks to honour this lineage while making it accessible to modern Melbourne.

Beyond drinks, the space features a thoughtful selection of housemade desserts and tea experiences, handcrafted with the same respect for balance and detail. It’s a place designed to slow down — to savour, reflect, and reconnect through the quiet ritual of matcha.
